Thy word is all if we could spell
Learning to Spell with George Herbert
A Weekend led by Brother Sam and Dr Elizabeth Cook
During this weekend at Hilfield we will be reading the poems of The Temple with close attention and thinking about the relationship between writing and, in its widest sense, reading. For George Herbert, verse writing was a symptom of spiritual health:
And now in age I bud again,
After so many deaths I live and write;
I once more smell the dew and rain
And relish versing… (‘The Flower’)
There will also be time during the weekend to smell the dew and rain, to walk, look, read and be quiet.
